AOG Wheel Service: How 24-Hour and Same-Day Turnaround Work
How AOG aircraft wheel service works at APSS in Dallas: 48-hour, 24-hour and same-day turnaround, published surcharges, the 8:00 AM cutoff and logistics.
APSS turns an aircraft wheel in one of three windows: 48 hours standard, 24 hours expedited, or same day for an aircraft on ground (AOG). Same-day AOG service takes 2–3 hours, adds $400 per wheel to the labor price, and requires the wheel at the shop by 8:00 AM.
What does AOG mean for a wheel shop?
AOG means aircraft on ground: the airplane cannot fly until a part is fixed or replaced. For wheels, the usual causes are a worn or damaged tire, a tire failure, or a wheel pulled for inspection after a hard landing or overheat.
An AOG wheel job has one goal. Get a serviceable wheel, released with an FAA 8130-3, back to the aircraft as fast as possible.
There are two ways to do that. Turn your own wheel fast, or replace it with an exchange or outright wheel from stock.
The right choice depends on three things: where the aircraft is, what happened to the wheel, and how soon the wheel can reach the shop. A worn tire on a healthy wheel near Love Field can be a same-day job. A wheel that went through a hard landing is not.
What are the three turnaround levels?
The expedite and AOG surcharges are added to the standard service price. Here is what each level costs for a Tire Change:
| Level | Turnaround | Surcharge | Nose wheel labor | Main wheel labor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 48 hours | None | $450–$625 | $500–$675 |
| Expedited | 24 hours | +$200 per wheel | $650–$825 | $700–$875 |
| AOG same-day | 2–3 hours | +$400 per wheel | $850–$1,025 | $900–$1,075 |
All prices are labor only. Parts, shop supplies and freight are billed as incurred.
A Tire Change includes a new tire mounted, bearings repacked, valve core and cap replaced, a leak check, eddy current NDT and an FAA 8130-3. Wheel Overhaul vs. Tire Change covers the full scope.
Overhauls speed up the same way. Standard overhaul turnaround is 10–15 days; expedited is 7 days (+$200 per wheel) and AOG is 4 days (+$400 per wheel). Overhaul labor runs $650–$825 for a nose wheel and $750–$925 for a main wheel, labor only.
How does same-day AOG service work?
Same-day service depends on two things: shop availability and an early arrival.
- Call first. Phone (214) 337-3328 to confirm same-day availability for your wheel part number.
- Get the wheel to APSS by 8:00 AM. The shop opens at 8:00 AM CT. A wheel that arrives later cannot be promised same-day service.
- APSS turns the wheel in 2–3 hours. The wheel is released with an FAA 8130-3.
- Pick up or ship. Collect the wheel at the counter, or have your courier take it back to the aircraft.
APSS is open 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM CT, Monday through Friday.
Plan the day backward from the 8:00 AM deadline. For an aircraft in the DFW area, that often means removing the wheel the evening before and dropping it off when the shop opens. For an aircraft farther away, compare a 24-hour expedite plus freight against an exchange wheel shipped from stock.
If inspection finds a defect, the plan changes. A repairable finding is re-quoted before work continues. A wheel beyond repair limits is red-tagged and rejected, and an exchange or outright wheel becomes the fastest route back to service.
Does same-day service skip any checks?
No inspection is skipped. A same-day Tire Change gets the same eddy current NDT, bearing repack, new valve core and cap, nitrogen inflation, leak check and FAA 8130-3 as a standard one.
The difference is the stretch period. Every wheel is leak checked at operating pressure with leak-detection solution, which shows a leak within minutes. On a standard job, a hold of typically 12–24 hours follows while the new tire stretches to size, and the pressure is rechecked at the end. For same-day AOG work, the stretch period can be waived. If it is, check tire pressure again before the next flights, because a new tire loses some pressure as it stretches.
How do I get my wheel to APSS fast?
APSS is at 2722 Burbank St, Dallas, TX 75235, near Dallas Love Field. There are four ways to get a wheel in and out:
- Walk-in drop-off. Bring the wheel to the shop during business hours.
- Counter pickup. Collect the finished wheel at the shop.
- Local pickup in the DFW area. APSS can collect the wheel, subject to availability. Ask when you call.
- Courier. APSS has established courier relationships. Ask which option fits your location.
International customers ship through a freight forwarder.
Deflate the tire fully before removing the wheel from the aircraft, and use a deflation tool rather than pulling the valve core.
When is an exchange wheel faster?
An exchange wheel is faster when your own wheel cannot be turned in time. That happens when:
- The wheel cannot reach APSS by 8:00 AM
- The aircraft is outside the DFW area and freight both ways takes too long
- The wheel saw a hard landing, a runway excursion, a flat-tire roll or an overheat, and needs an overhaul rather than a tire change
- The removed wheel is likely to fail inspection
As of October 2026, APSS stocks overhauled exchange and outright wheels for several Falcon, Challenger, Hawker, Citation and Gulfstream part numbers. Each is released with an FAA 8130-3. You return your removed wheel as the core within 14 days.
Current stock and prices are on /wheel-exchange. Aircraft Wheel Exchange vs. Outright vs. Repair explains the core terms.
What should I have ready when I call?
A short call goes faster with these details ready:
- Wheel part number and serial number. Check the part number against the capability list.
- Aircraft type and wheel position. Nose or main.
- Reason for removal. Worn tire, failed tire, hard landing, runway excursion, overheat or fuse plug release. An overload or overheat event usually means an inspection or overhaul, not a tire change.
- Tire. APSS supplies the tire and all parts. If you are supplying your own tire, say so and send it with the wheel.
- Turnaround level. Standard, expedited or same-day AOG.
- Delivery plan. Walk-in, local pickup, courier or freight forwarder, and where the wheel goes when it is done.
